5 Yard Wool Kilt

Details

Our "5 Yard Wool" kilt is a cross between our Semi Traditional model and our Premier model. It’s constructed the same way as our Semi Traditional kilt, but it’s made from wool, like our Premier.   This model kilt is constructed from 5 yards (bigger guys may use 6 yards) of the finest worsted wool woven in the UK. Each kilt is individually tailored to the measurements provided to insure a proper fit. It features a tapered and fringed front apron, approximately 16 – 26 pleats (each about an inch wide) and a triple buckle closure system. It also comes with 2 belt loops (4 inches tall) on the back of the kilt to accommodate a traditional kilt belt.

We can make this kilt in ANY of the stock wool tartans shown in our extensive tartan gallery found in the "Tartans" tab above this text. We have access to thousands of tartans, including: Scottish Clan tartans, Universal (i.e. District & Fashion) tartans, Irish tartans and Welsh tartans.

We would ask that you measure carefully for our kilts.  Since these are custom made to fit the measurements provided, you will need to be sure of the exact sizing. We will not refund in the case of mistakes in measuring.  Detailed measuring instructions can be found in the "Measuring Instructions" tab above this text.

Question: My tartan is available in 13 AND 16 oz cloth... which should I get?

The weight of the cloth is a personal preference.  13 oz cloth is considered "Medium Weight" while 16 oz is considered "Heavy Weight".  While they will both make a very nice kilt, which weight you want is a matter of taste.  We would ask you to consider your environment... If you're the type of person who is always 'warm', live in a hot / humid climate or will be wearing your kilt most often outdoors during the summer, then we'd suggest the 13 oz cloth.  If you are always cool, live in a cool climate (Canada or northern USA), or will be wearing the kilt indoors most of the time, a 16 oz kilt may be right for you.

Question:  Why are there so many / so few choices for my name?

Our wool tartan gallery shows you every stock tartan from every mill in the UK.  We want to make sure our customers can weigh all of their options before making a decision.  We don't just use 1 mill or 2 mills for our cloth... we use the top 7 tartan mills in the UK (plus some smaller ones for custom weaves).  This gives our customers the maximum number of tartan options we can provide.

Some clans have only 1 tartan or there may only be 1 mill that weaves a specific tartan.  Larger clans may have DOZENS of tartan designs woven by multiple mills.  The options shown in the "Tartans" tab above list them all.

  1. FAST, PERFECT FIT, BEAUTIFUL Review by TIM B

After a long debate and thorough research, I finally decided to purchase a wool kilt. I chose the 5 yarder because I wasn't ready to spend the money for a traditional wool kilt and wanted a lighter weighted wool kilt.

The kilt arrived way before the date I had expected. When I tried it on I couldn't have been happier! A perfect fit! I am 6'5" tall and I was worried about getting a kilt in the proper length. The length was perfect! This was a quality, well made garment that I plan to have for years to come.

I also ordered a casual kilt at the same time. That, too was an excellent fit.

USA Kilts is MY kilt store, for sure! (Posted on 5/3/12)

I was thoroughly impressed with the work on this 5 yard 13oz kilt that I had constructed using the Tipperary County Tartan. The turnaround time was amazing and the fit was amazing. I can so tell a difference from some of my earlier kilts (from different vendors). Rocky and his staff were very helpful through the process and made sure that all of my measurements were correct. I can not tell you how many comments I've received already on the workmanship alone. Fantastic Job! (Posted on 3/19/12)

From the excellent fit to the beautiful embossed straps, fantastic workmanship and quality of the kilt, I truly love it. There was a problem with the availability of the material I had selected, but Mr. Roeger was quick getting in touch with me and correcting the issue. I still got the kilt I've wanted for so long within 3 weeks, just in time for St. Patrick's day. I hardly look at the other "off the rack" kilts I own now that I have a fine wool garment made for me. I had recently been turned in to kilts by a good friend of mine. He instantly suggested USA Kilts. I however, like to shop around for what I think is the best deal. After a couple weeks of searching the internet for different companies, I concluded that I would get the best quality and craftsmanship from a USA kilts kilt! Boy was that an understatement! When my 5yder arrived in the mail (US Marines leatherneck tartan) I was blown away. This is my first kilt so I threw it in right away and wore it to a concert that very night. It was so comfortable and fit absolutely perfect. I got so many compliments and handed out all the USA kilts business cards I had from you guys! I have become a diehard USA kilts fan and I can wait to get a semi trad and a full 8yder!!! (Posted on 3/19/12)

I ordered an Isle of Skye tartan kilt and within 2 1/2 weeks it was at my door . Because I asked for pleated to stripe with this tartan they had to do 1.5 inch pleats instead of 1 inch pleats. It looks Awsome! The colors are very attractive, the fitt is perfect, and the costomer service just can't be beat. Thanks Mac for the hard work! I have both a casual and a semi trad in the pv so this was my first wool kilt from USA Kilts and I can't wait to save up the money for a Premier 8 yarder. (Posted on 1/24/12)

  8. WOW they're fast Review by Jason J.

I was stuck in a spot. I had thought about getting a kilt for years but kept putting it off. My cousin's wedding came up suddenly (it was a last minute thing) and I was asked to wear a kilt in our family colors like my cousin and brother and father. With only 3 weeks to spare, I thought I wasn't going to have one in time. I called and spoke with a lady on the phone who assured me they could help. I was still skeptical as the wedding was only 3 weeks and 2 days away and they had to get the fabric from Scotland and make my kilt from scratch.

To make a long story short, 3 weeks to the DAY after I ordered it, the kilt came in the mail. It fit perfectly and was a huge hit at the wedding. I don't know how they did it so fast, but they did a great job and got me out of a jam. Thanks USA Kilts! (Posted on 11/11/11)

A 5 yard 13 oz. wool kilt was on my wish list until I saw one posted online in a beautiful tartan. I immediately ordered one. It is made of quality wool with double fringe front apron, 5 and a half inch apron return pleat, 21 (just over 1 inch) pleats and the embossed straps are a quality touch that draws compliments. It fits perfectly and already is a favorite among my, 4 yard and 8 yard, wool kilts. Order one, you'll love it. Thanks Rocky for posting the photo that prompted my order. (Posted on 9/23/11)
