A. Waist Measurement
- Make sure to use a good sewing tape measure. If you don't have a sewing tape measure, you can use a piece of "NON STRETCHY" rope or a belt to measure, mark it and then lay it flat on a tape measure to get the measurement.
- These kilts are meant to be worn at the “True Waist” (about 1” above your naval). This is where the top of the kilt will sit.
- DO NOT SUCK IN YOUR STOMACH. You're not fooling anyone and you're only going to get a kilt that's too small. In the same token, do not push your stomach out. Just relax and stand "normal".
- This measurement should be taken firmly... not so tight that you're turning blue, but not so loose that it will fall off of you.
- Match-up the front-end of the tape with the corresponding number that overlaps it.
- If you’re using “non stretchy rope” or a belt to measure, mark the spot where the rope / belt overlaps and lay it flat… measure that with a tape measure to get your waist size
- That's your true waist size for a kilt! Note... it will probably be 2 to 4 inches MORE than your pants size. This is common.
B. Hip Size
- With that same tape measure, measure around the absolute largest part of your rear.
- Take this measurement a little LOOSELY. You should be able to slide a finger between the tape measure and your body when you measure.
- That's what we need for the hip number. In most cases, it's about 4-6 inches larger than the waist measurement.
C. Length measurement WITH assistance:
- This step is easier to do if you have the help of a second person and if you can put on a pair of shorts.
- Stand tall with your back straight. You're going to measure down the SIDE of your leg to your knee. Do NOT look down or bend over as this will change the length measurement. Just stand up straight and let the other person measure.
- Put the "0" end of the tape measure at the top of where your kilt WILL BE (the same height you took your waist measurement from) on your side. Measure from that point down the side of your body to the middle of your knee.
- The number on the tape that is right where the bottom edge of the kilt WILL be (the middle of the knee)is the length.
- The following are normal height / length measurements... if you get something very different, please call us for assistance:
- If your height is 5'7" to 5'10": Length should be about 23"
- If your height is 5'11" to 6'2": Length should be about 24"
- If your height is 6'3" to 6'6": Length should be about 25"
- If your height is 6'7" to 6'9": Length should be about 26"

C. Length measurement WITH BATH TOWEL assistance:
- Take a bath towel and FOLD IT so that it is 24" long.
- Standing in a pair of shorts (SO YOU CAN SEE YOUR KNEES) in front of a full length mirror, hold the towel up to your waist, putting the top of the towel at the top of where you'd like to wear the kilt.
- If the 24" length hits below your knee, shorten the towel by folding another inch or two, so that the bottom edge hits you square in the middle of the kneecap.
- If the 24" length hits above your knee, lengthen the towel by unfolding an inch or two, so that the bottom edge hits you square in the middle of the kneecap
- Once you have the top of the towel sitting at the top of where you want to wear the kilt and the bottom edge hitting the middle of your knee, measure the length of the folded towel from the top to the bottom. That will be your kilt’s length measurement.
C. Length measurement WITHOUT assistance:
- Kneel on the floor with your back straight. You're going to measure down the SIDE of your leg to the floor.
- From the top of where your kilt WILL BE (the same height you took your waist measurement from), measure down the side of your body to the floor down the side of your leg. It's easier to put the "0" end of the tape measure barely touching the floor and the numbered end at the top.
- Mark the tape measure where you want the top of the kilt to sit (the same height you took your waist measurement from).
- SUBTRACT 1" FROM THIS MEASUREMENT to have the kilt sit at the middle of the knee.
