Fly Plaid Brooch FAQ:
What is a kilt fly plaid brooch?
The Scottish plaid brooch has ancient roots and was, at one time, a critical accessory for the Great Kilt. It was the means of keeping the excess fabric of the kilt, which was not bunched up into pleats, organized. It was a locally evolved essential which grew out of cloak clasps of the Middle Ages. Today, the fly plaid brooch is more ornamental when used with a modern kilt fly plaid. However, you CAN wear any of the plaid brooches we have for sale with a Great Kilt and it will perform its original function.
Is there a difference between a new kilt plaid brooch and an antique plaid brooch?
Only in your willingness to wear it. If you have a family heirloom brooch, we suggest you consider carefully what condition it is in, and only wear it for very special occasions -- and preferably indoors. If you want a brooch for more vigorous activities like Reenactment, Renn Fair, LARPing, or as part of an outfit you will wear on a very regular basis such as Masonic Lodge meetings, please use a new one.
Do I need a kilt or brooch fly plaid?
Some people have used plaid brooches as another sort of accessory, but it is not common. You should be wearing your brooch with a fly plaid or a great kilt. Of course we offer the fly plaid for sale as well. However, you usually buy a plaid when you buy your kilt. If you already own a kilt but need a plaid to match it, please call us to discuss making as perfect a tartan match as possible.
