Product Description
Our 5 Yard Wool kilt is a fantastic value for a “mid level” kilt. This kilt, like our 8 yard models, uses the finest 13 and 16 oz wool cloth woven in the UK. Our 5 Yard Wool kilt is a great option for those who want their clan tartan, but don’t want to invest in a full 8 Yard Kilt. It is also a wonderful option for those looking for a lower yardage kilt for it's reduced weight during summer wear. It will look good in both a casual setting, like festivals or the pub, and a formal setting, like a wedding.
Measuring for your kilt: We would ask that you measure carefully for our kilts. Since these are custom made to fit the measurements provided, you will need to be sure of the exact sizing. We will not refund in the case of mistakes in measuring. Detailed measuring instructions can be found in the "Measuring Instructions" tab below this text.

Measuring Instructions
Waist
A Traditional kilt is worn higher than your pants, just above the belly button (for larger customers, just above the WIDEST part of your belly). This is where the top of the kilt will sit.
DO NOT HOLD YOUR STOMACH IN. You’ll only going to get a kilt that's too small. Just relax and stand "at ease".
Make sure to use a good sewing tape measure. If you don't have a sewing tape measure, you can use a leather belt to measure. Wrap it around you, mark it and then lay it flat on a metal tape measure to get the measurement. The tape measure should be snug – as snug as you will be wearing the kilt.
*Note: It will probably be 2 to 4 inches more than your pants size. This is common.
*TIP: BIG guys with large bellies may want to wear the kilt around the naval, as it gives a more flattering appearance.
Hip
With the same tape measure, measure around the absolute largest part of your rear.
Take this measurement a little LOOSELY. You should be able to slide a finger between the tape measure and your body when you measure.
This is your HIP measurement. In most cases, it's about 4-6 inches larger than the waist measurement.
Length
If possible, it’s best to take this measurement wearing shorts and a form fitting shirt. There are 3 different ways to measure length:
1) With assistance
2) With bath towel assistance
3) Without assistance
1) Length Measurement with assistance
Stand tall with your back straight. Do NOT look down or bend over as this will change the length measurement. Just stand tall and face forward.
Have the other person measure down the SIDE of your leg. On your side, put the "0" end of the tape measure at the top of where your kilt will be (the same height you took your waist measurement from). Measure from that point down the side of your body to the middle of your knee.
The number on the tape that is right where the bottom edge of the kilt will be is the length.
2) Length Measurement with bath towel assistance
Take a bath towel and FOLD IT so that it is 24" long.
Wear a pair of shorts, so you can see your knees and stand roughly 10 feet back from a full length mirror. Hold the towel up to your waist, putting the top of the towel at the spot you took the waist measurement… just above the belly button.
If the 24" length hits below your knee, shorten the towel by folding another inch or two, so that the bottom edge hits you square in the middle of the kneecap.
If the 24" length hits above your knee, lengthen the towel by unfolding an inch or two, so that the bottom edge hits you square in the middle of the kneecap.
3) Length measurement without assistance
Kneel on the floor with your back straight. You're going to measure down the SIDE of your leg to the floor.
From the top of where your kilt will be (the same height you took your waist measurement from), measure down the side of your body to the floor down the side of your leg. It's easier to put the "0" end of the tape measure barely touching the floor and the numbered end at the top.
SUBTRACT 1" FROM THIS MEASUREMENT to have the kilt sit at the middle of the knee.
Use the following chart for reference. These are typical height / length measurements.

Value Quality Price While we like overall quality and workmanship of kilt, we were not happy with fit. Measured exactly as instructed but when kilt arrived was too big. Measured actual kilt waist and it was correct inches but only with buckles pulled to the very last hole. Sent back for refit and it came back only slightly smaller as though barely moved the buckles on one side and not all three like we asked. Now wondering if it worthwhile to order more like we had planned. Even with the decent price it not worth it if they don't fit well. (Posted on 3/26/2019) - Best kilt I own now! Peter

Price Value Quality I’m so happy with my 5 Yard Wool Kilt! This is my first pure wool kilt and it’s the best kilt I own now. The quality is absolutely amazing. I got it in the Maple Leaf Muted tartan because I wanted something to show off my Canadian pride and I just love the colors! There’s only one problem with it which is it’s made me want more of them lol. (Posted on 3/22/2019) - I ordered a 5 yard kilt + the whole kit. Joe

Quality Price Value Just got my Mackintosh modern kilt in the mail today, and I am thoroughly impressed. I wish I could post a picture! The pleats in the back are a little ruffled from being packaged, nothing an iron can’t fix. The set is perfect and I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. Highly recommend USA Kilts, they seem to be happy to work with requests when they’re able. Will definitely be getting my future kilts from them. It’s time for a celebratory dram. Sláinte! Buyers Guide
Question: My tartan is available in 13 AND 16 oz cloth... which should I get?
The weight of the cloth is a personal preference. 13 oz cloth is considered "Medium Weight" while 16 oz is considered "Heavy Weight". While they will both make a very nice kilt, which weight you want is a matter of taste. We would ask you to consider your environment... If you're the type of person who is always 'warm', live in a hot / humid climate or will be wearing your kilt most often outdoors during the summer, then we'd suggest the 13 oz cloth. If you are always cool, live in a cool climate (Canada or northern USA), or will be wearing the kilt indoors most of the time, a 16 oz kilt may be right for you.
Question: Why are there so many / so few choices for my name?
Our wool tartan gallery shows you every stock tartan from every mill in the UK. We want to make sure our customers can weigh all of their options before making a decision. We don't just use 1 mill or 2 mills for our cloth... we use the top 7 tartan mills in the UK (plus some smaller ones for custom weaves). This gives our customers the maximum number of tartan options we can provide.
Some clans have only 1 tartan or there may only be 1 mill that weaves a specific tartan. Larger clans may have DOZENS of tartan designs woven by multiple mills. The options shown in the Tartan Gallery lists them all. -
