Product Description
Our 5 Yard Wool kilt is a fantastic value for a “mid level” kilt. This kilt, like our 8 yard models, uses the finest 13 and 16 oz wool cloth woven in the UK. Our 5 Yard Wool kilt is a great option for those who want their clan tartan, but don’t want to invest in a full 8 Yard Kilt. It is also a wonderful option for those looking for a lower yardage kilt for it's reduced weight during summer wear. It will look good in both a casual setting, like festivals or the pub, and a formal setting, like a wedding.
Measuring for your kilt: We would ask that you measure carefully for our kilts. Since these are custom made to fit the measurements provided, you will need to be sure of the exact sizing. We will not refund in the case of mistakes in measuring. Detailed measuring instructions can be found in the "Measuring Instructions" tab below this text.

Measuring Instructions
Waist
A Traditional kilt is worn higher than your pants, just above the belly button (for larger customers, just above the WIDEST part of your belly). This is where the top of the kilt will sit.
DO NOT HOLD YOUR STOMACH IN. You’ll only going to get a kilt that's too small. Just relax and stand "at ease".
Make sure to use a good sewing tape measure. If you don't have a sewing tape measure, you can use a leather belt to measure. Wrap it around you, mark it and then lay it flat on a metal tape measure to get the measurement. The tape measure should be snug – as snug as you will be wearing the kilt.
*Note: It will probably be 2 to 4 inches more than your pants size. This is common.
*TIP: BIG guys with large bellies may want to wear the kilt around the naval, as it gives a more flattering appearance.
Hip
With the same tape measure, measure around the absolute largest part of your rear.
Take this measurement a little LOOSELY. You should be able to slide a finger between the tape measure and your body when you measure.
This is your HIP measurement. In most cases, it's about 4-6 inches larger than the waist measurement.
Length
If possible, it’s best to take this measurement wearing shorts and a form fitting shirt. There are 3 different ways to measure length:
1) With assistance
2) With bath towel assistance
3) Without assistance
1) Length Measurement with assistance
Stand tall with your back straight. Do NOT look down or bend over as this will change the length measurement. Just stand tall and face forward.
Have the other person measure down the SIDE of your leg. On your side, put the "0" end of the tape measure at the top of where your kilt will be (the same height you took your waist measurement from). Measure from that point down the side of your body to the middle of your knee.
The number on the tape that is right where the bottom edge of the kilt will be is the length.
2) Length Measurement with bath towel assistance
Take a bath towel and FOLD IT so that it is 24" long.
Wear a pair of shorts, so you can see your knees and stand roughly 10 feet back from a full length mirror. Hold the towel up to your waist, putting the top of the towel at the spot you took the waist measurement… just above the belly button.
If the 24" length hits below your knee, shorten the towel by folding another inch or two, so that the bottom edge hits you square in the middle of the kneecap.
If the 24" length hits above your knee, lengthen the towel by unfolding an inch or two, so that the bottom edge hits you square in the middle of the kneecap.
3) Length measurement without assistance
Kneel on the floor with your back straight. You're going to measure down the SIDE of your leg to the floor.
From the top of where your kilt will be (the same height you took your waist measurement from), measure down the side of your body to the floor down the side of your leg. It's easier to put the "0" end of the tape measure barely touching the floor and the numbered end at the top.
SUBTRACT 1" FROM THIS MEASUREMENT to have the kilt sit at the middle of the knee.
Use the following chart for reference. These are typical height / length measurements.

Quality Price Value Unsure about a traditional kilt I started with the semi Traditional Poly 5 yard, (which I loved!) so with all the options (Tartan-wise) in a 5 yard wool, it was the logical next step. I wish I had words to compliment this garment enough..... I don't.... they do not exist! I'm over the moon with this kilt! It is the single most luxurious piece of clothing I've ever worn! From the flawless cloth, to the embossed leather straps, to the carefully and lovingly stitched pleats (thank you so much Morgan! You are clearly a master at your craft!) this thing screams quality. Add to that the fact that I can pay a little more for a rush order! You all are the best! I'll be in touch soon! Plenty more tartans with my name on em! (Posted on 3/6/2021) - 5 Yard Wool Kilt Bob G

Price Value Quality This is my 4th kilt, the third wool one. My other two woolies are an 8 yrd Fraser ancient hand made in Scotland, and a hand/machine made by a kiltmaker with three royal warrants. The 16 oz loch is fabulous. I had it done in a waist length and used the measurements from my casual I got from Usakilts a yr ago. Fits absolutely correct and is every bit as quality in every instance as the hand made and the other with the three royal warrants. (Posted on 1/13/2021) - Caledonia Ancient Kilt Robert

Price Value Quality This is my first bright tartan kilt - and I love it! I bought the 13 oz. with the intent of wearing it during warmer times. Naturally I couldn't wait until spring, and I've already worn it. Good fabric, colorful tartan, well made, and delivered on time as promised. (I splurged for the rush service, because I was using a discount code, and the extra money became negligible.) My only issue is my own fault. It's just a tad too big (about 1.5") - due to my overcompensating when measuring, and not wanting any tightness. I have to wear it at the smallest size. Now I just need to keep telling myself this is not an excuse to put on more pounds! Overall, I'm very pleased - thank you! (Posted on 12/28/2020) - Great quality and service Maddy

Price Value Quality I started getting beck into doing gigs with my Highland pipes and discovered my old kilt did not fit comfortably any more. I guess we all get a bit bigger when we have been out of High School for 13 years lol.
Anyway, I suddenly had a booking and need a new kilt fast. Luckily, the great people at USA Kilts saved the day! They even accommodated my short stature to get the perfect fit!
The kilt was special because it was my first time wearing my ancestral tartan; it makes me feel like I am able to honor them by wearing their colors.
The customer service was outstanding! Everything came just in time for the gig and it was perfect!
I made it to the gig and everyone was impressed by the new uniform.
I will certainly be purchasing more from them in the future. (Posted on 12/21/2020) - Outstanding Kilt Phillipsp76

Value Quality Price I am astonished at the kilts that we received from USA kilts. My daughter was getting married in December. In late October she decided she wanted the men in the wedding party to be in kilts to honor our Scotish heritage. It took several more weeks to get measurements and commitments and we finally got the order in. I could not believe it when just a few weeks later, 4 WEEKS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE We had our kilts in plenty of time. The quality and workmanship is exactly what I hoped for. I could not be more happy and will recommend USA killed over and over and over! (Posted on 12/4/2020) - Great fit and finish Skarðaborg

Quality Price Value This is my 3rd tailored kilt from USA Kilts. All of them have been great, and this was a welcome addition. As it says, this is of course lighter than the 8 yard, but has much the same great feel. This will make for an easier wear next summer. Looking very forward to my next one! Price Value Quality This was my first kilt. So I ordered from the best kilt company, USA Kilts. My first outing was church and then the store. Everyone commented that it is a beautiful kilt. I am a big guy and it looks great on me.
The ultimate compliment is that I ordered my second kilt already. I am looking forward to receiving positive comments from all who see me wearing it in the future. (Posted on 10/17/2020) - Beautiful first tweed kilt Mike Fay

Buyers Guide
Question: My tartan is available in 13 AND 16 oz cloth... which should I get?
The weight of the cloth is a personal preference. 13 oz cloth is considered "Medium Weight" while 16 oz is considered "Heavy Weight". While they will both make a very nice kilt, which weight you want is a matter of taste. We would ask you to consider your environment... If you're the type of person who is always 'warm', live in a hot / humid climate or will be wearing your kilt most often outdoors during the summer, then we'd suggest the 13 oz cloth. If you are always cool, live in a cool climate (Canada or northern USA), or will be wearing the kilt indoors most of the time, a 16 oz kilt may be right for you.
Question: Why are there so many / so few choices for my name?
Our wool tartan gallery shows you every stock tartan from every mill in the UK. We want to make sure our customers can weigh all of their options before making a decision. We don't just use 1 mill or 2 mills for our cloth... we use the top 7 tartan mills in the UK (plus some smaller ones for custom weaves). This gives our customers the maximum number of tartan options we can provide.
Some clans have only 1 tartan or there may only be 1 mill that weaves a specific tartan. Larger clans may have DOZENS of tartan designs woven by multiple mills. The options shown in the Tartan Gallery lists them all. -
