Measuring Instructions
Waist
A Traditional kilt is worn higher than your pants, just above the belly button (for larger customers, just above the WIDEST part of your belly). This is where the top of the kilt will sit.
DO NOT HOLD YOUR STOMACH IN. You’ll only going to get a kilt that's too small. Just relax and stand "at ease".
Make sure to use a good sewing tape measure. If you don't have a sewing tape measure, you can use a leather belt to measure. Wrap it around you, mark it and then lay it flat on a metal tape measure to get the measurement. The tape measure should be snug – as snug as you will be wearing the kilt.
*Note: It will probably be 2 to 4 inches more than your pants size. This is common.
*TIP: BIG guys with large bellies may want to wear the kilt around the naval, as it gives a more flattering appearance.
Hip
With the same tape measure, measure around the absolute largest part of your rear.
Take this measurement a little LOOSELY. You should be able to slide a finger between the tape measure and your body when you measure.
This is your HIP measurement. In most cases, it's about 4-6 inches larger than the waist measurement.
Length
If possible, it’s best to take this measurement wearing shorts and a form fitting shirt. There are 3 different ways to measure length:
1) With assistance
2) With bath towel assistance
3) Without assistance
1) Length Measurement with assistance
Stand tall with your back straight. Do NOT look down or bend over as this will change the length measurement. Just stand tall and face forward.
Have the other person measure down the SIDE of your leg. On your side, put the "0" end of the tape measure at the top of where your kilt will be (the same height you took your waist measurement from). Measure from that point down the side of your body to the middle of your knee.
The number on the tape that is right where the bottom edge of the kilt will be is the length.
2) Length Measurement with bath towel assistance
Take a bath towel and FOLD IT so that it is 24" long.
Wear a pair of shorts, so you can see your knees and stand roughly 10 feet back from a full length mirror. Hold the towel up to your waist, putting the top of the towel at the spot you took the waist measurement… just above the belly button.
If the 24" length hits below your knee, shorten the towel by folding another inch or two, so that the bottom edge hits you square in the middle of the kneecap.
If the 24" length hits above your knee, lengthen the towel by unfolding an inch or two, so that the bottom edge hits you square in the middle of the kneecap.
3) Length measurement without assistance
Kneel on the floor with your back straight. You're going to measure down the SIDE of your leg to the floor.
From the top of where your kilt will be (the same height you took your waist measurement from), measure down the side of your body to the floor down the side of your leg. It's easier to put the "0" end of the tape measure barely touching the floor and the numbered end at the top.
SUBTRACT 1" FROM THIS MEASUREMENT to have the kilt sit at the middle of the knee.
Use the following chart for reference. These are typical height / length measurements.

Quality Price Value I bought the kilt with a PC for my daughter's wedding. The quality of the wool fabric was superior as was the workmanship. Many comments all positive. Unfortunately no kilt lifters (must have looked too distinguished).
This kilt will last longer than me. (Posted on 3/19/2020) - Gorgeous! Lynn

Quality Price Value This kilt is simply gorgeous. Carefully made, and looks terrific. And it is not a “generic,” a Royal Stewart or Scottish National (which I have). This is my family, my clan. Glad I ordered the fly plaid and flashes to match. And the left over cloth from making all this was rolled up and sent to me. Should there be a need for repairs, I am all set. Thank you so much! What a wonderful, professional job. (Posted on 3/13/2020) - Stunning craftsmanship J Lanata

Price Value Quality I waited. I saved. Finally I made my order. Absolutely no regrets! This kilt has been a 'bucket list' item for me for many years. There was a surcharge based on the mill but I didn't care. Having a top of the line kilt in my own family tartan is special. The attention to detail, the embossed belts, the perfection of the kilt has to be seen to believe. I would recommend this product with no reservations. Price Value Quality i can't put into words how happy i am about my resent purchase, but i'll try. The quality of materials and attention to detail are second to none. The fit is perfect; wore it over the weekend doing some work in and around the house and playing with the dog in the backyard and the kilt remained in place. Happy i measured several times before placing my order. This kilt looks and feels like it can take a beating (not that i would consider abusing it, unless absolutely necessary). In Scotland kilts are passed on through the family as heirlooms because they are well made and long lasting. So is my new USA Kilt Traditional 8 Yard Wool. Maybe some day my son will wear this very kilt with the same pride of the tartan and confidence that it was made by the great people at USA Kilts. (Posted on 10/7/2019) - Beyond thrilled JD

Value Quality Price I am now (finally) the proud owner of my very own kilt. I purchases this for official use with my agency's Honor Guard and I couldn't be happier. In fact one of the other members is talking about ordering one as well and I immediately told him USA Kilts would be the supplier I'd use again without hesitation. The craftsmanship is obvious and this kilt is gorgeous. It was done and in my hands in about half the time they estimated it would take to complete and ship. They even sent the scrap fabric with it so I can have another set of flashes made or a couple other ideas I've got going on in my noggin. Truly an excellent product and one I can see is going last my lifetime. Thank you USA Kilts. (Posted on 9/28/2019) - Elegant crafting and beautiful – your patience will be rewarded! Mark

Price Value Quality I’ve thought about getting a more formal traditional kilt for years but kept putting it off. In quick succession I ordered a PV Casual, 5 yard, and 8 yard premier from USA Kilts. I am more than pleased with the exceptional customer service and care they take with customers. Lucas called me to clarify measurements and answered all my emails promptly. As for the 8-yard premier, Mac is a absolute craftsman, the pleats are crisp, the stitching is hidden – you can’t even see the belt loops and the fit is perfect. I went with a 13oz Red Robertson Modern and while it took a while to arrive the end result is well worth the wait. Thank you USA Kilts. (Posted on 7/30/2019)

Buyers Guide
Question: My tartan is available in 13 AND 16 oz cloth... which should I get?
The weight of the cloth is a personal preference. 13 oz cloth is considered "Medium Weight" while 16 oz is considered "Heavy Weight". While they will both make a very nice kilt, which weight you want is a matter of taste. We would ask you to consider your environment... If you're the type of person who is always 'warm', live in a hot / humid climate or will be wearing your kilt most often outdoors during the summer, then we'd suggest the 13 oz cloth. If you are always cool, live in a cool climate (Canada or northern USA), or will be wearing the kilt indoors most of the time, a 16 oz kilt may be right for you.
Question: Why are there so many / so few choices for my name?
Our wool tartan gallery shows you every stock tartan from every mill in the UK. We want to make sure our customers can weigh all of their options before making a decision. We don't just use 1 mill or 2 mills for our cloth... we use the top 7 tartan mills in the UK (plus some smaller ones for custom weaves). This gives our customers the maximum number of tartan options we can provide.
Some clans have only 1 tartan or there may only be 1 mill that weaves a specific tartan. Larger clans may have DOZENS of tartan designs woven by multiple mills. All the options are shown in the "Tartans" gallery. -
