Product Description
Saint Columba founded the Iona Abbey on the Isle of Iona off the west coast of Scotland in the 6th century. The famous St. John's Cross was a huge monumental cross erected there. It has a span of 2.2m and was structurally flawed (it's ring was added at some point to try to save it). The massive sculpture probably collapsed not long after it was set up. it is now preserved in the Abby museum. A replica can be seen by the doorway of the Abbey.
Our highly detailed representation of the St.John's standing cross measures 8" X 15" and is rich in 'Book of Kells' style detail including the "serpent" and "birds nest" knotwork designs. Handmade from durable cured art plaster in America. It makes a wonderful housewarming gift! -
