Comfortable and Traditional Kilt Socks and Flashes at USA Kilts

We offer a broad selection of kilt hose for sale (sometimes called kilt socks or kilt stockings). These traditional socks are the first accessory you should put on if you want to “dress up” a kilt outfit. Of course, they are great for cooler weather as well. Most of our Scottish kilt hose are wool. About as thick as cotton athletic socks, these highland socks cover the calf up to about 3" below the kneecap. All of our wool kilt hose feature a decorative cuff which, when turned over, covers the elastic portion of the flashes (kilt sock garters) which help to hold the socks up. Made of wool or a wool blend, our hose come in a wide variety of styles and colors so you can tastefully match your tartan and express your style.

What are Kilt Flashes?

For anyone wanting to wear the kilt with kilt hose, flashes are a must. Flashes (sometimes mistakenly called kilt flashers) are effectively garters which help hold up the hose. The “flash” are the decorative ribbons which hang from the hidden elastic garter. Flashes can be made of a solid color grosgrain ribbon or of wool or PV tartan. Click here for a video on how to put on Kilt Hose Flashes.

Which kilt hose and flashes should I choose?

It’s all up to you! The most traditional hose are diced or argyle kilt hose. However, customers typically choose a solid color that tones well with the kilt. Cream hose are very popular. Though not very traditional, they have become commonly associated with weddings and formal wear. If you have a “Modern” color palette tartan (primary colors), then you may want to opt for our bottle green kilt hose or solid navy blue kilt hose. And of course black and charcoal go with everything. We also offer marled thread hose (Lovat hose) which look great with “Ancient” color palette tartan kilts.

Are Scottish hose and flashes different from Irish hose and flashes? Or Welsh?

No. It’s all about your color choices. However, many Irish men will choose green hose or green flashes. And for something little more fun, we also offer Irish kilt hose featuring an embroidered shamrock on the cuff. See our complete Irish Accessories Collection for more ideas.

Does it matter what hose and flashes I choose?

Kilt sock flashes, like kilt hose, come in a variety of solid colors. Or you can opt for tartan flashes -- these being kilt hose flashes which match the fabric of your kilt. We usually make them at the same time as your kilt for a perfect color match. Hose & flashes are typically bought together. You can never have too many of either! Especially if you plan on kilting up several days in a row, like at a weekend festival. The only real rule of thumb is to NOT wear kilt hose and flashes of the exact same color. You want your flashes to show up. Choose contrasting colors where possible.
