What is the correct tie to wear with a kilt?

This depends on the occasion, context and jacket ... For a formal occasion, such as a wedding where you are in the wedding party or a formal supper or dance), you will probably be wearing a Prince Charlie jacket, Brian Boru jacket or Regulation Doublet. In that case, a bow tie is the best option, almost always a silk bow tie. A colored bow tie is acceptable if the color tones well with the tartan of your kilt. If you are unsure, go for black and avoid the other bow tie colors.

Another popular choice of jacket for formal, semi-formal or even just “nice” day events is the Argyll (or the Irish equivalent, the Kilkenny). With this jacket you will usually be wearing a five-button vest. Your tie choices are broad. A silk tie will be most formal, like a bow tie. But a dress tie for Highland wear can also be made of wool. In fact, a wool tie is more traditional and a fine choice for almost all occasions. This includes both solid-color wool neck ties and the popular clan tartan tie.

What is a ruche tie?

A ruche tie is a “modern traditional” tie that harkens back to romantic Regency and Victorian fashion. Often called a wedding ruche tie, it is obviously meant to be formal. However, despite some trends in the kit rental world, we highly recommend wearing the silk ruche tie with a five-button vest, NOT with a Prince Charlie three-button vest.

When do you wear a tartan tie?

We could see using a clan tie for some formal occasions, perhaps with a Argyll. However it is really more suited for day wear or “nice” evening wear (ie. suit formal). We recommend wearing a wool tartan tie only when you are wearing a vest so as to avoid the “too much plaid” or “trying too hard” pitfall of Celtic dress. Tartan ties look great with tweeds and are ideal for festivals, clan gatherings, informal Burns Suppers, etc.

Is there a special Irish heritage tie?

Yes and no. A kilt tie is a kilt tie regardless of the specific heritage theme. So any tie will work with an Irish kilt and Irish jackets. We offer the full range of Irish county tartan neckties, so if you wear a County tartan you’re all set.
