This sett with three lines is said to have come about when the 4th Duke of Gordon applied to Forsyth of Huntly to provide kilts for his troops. Forsyth is said to have produced three designs with one, two and three yellow stripes respectively. The Duke chose the single stripe and called in the heads of some Gordon branches to choose from the others. Esslemont is said to have taken the three stripe version. This sett appears in Vestiarium Scoticum but is simply called Gordon with no mention of Esselmont anywhere and is listed under 'Border Clans'. Where the suffix of Esselmont has come from has yet to be discovered - Esselmont is near Ellon in Aberdeenshire.
