Blades of Honor and Elegance - Sgian Dubhs at USA Kilts
Highlanders typically carried full sets of various weapons. Sgian / Skean Dubh, pronounced "Skeen Doo" means "black knife" in Gaelic. The sgian dubh knife was a small backup weapon and utility blade, usually concealed in the folds of the Great Kilt. Over the years, it became customary to take out your sgian dubh and tuck it in the top of your kilt hose when you were among friends. “Black knife” may refer to the dark colored wood used for the handles, or to the idea that it was a hidden weapon.
Every knife sold by USA Kilts is a real sgian dubh, made in the UK. Our line includes the rustic antler sgian dubh with genuine Scottish Red Deer stag horn handle. In addition to the stag horn sgian dubh, we also offer a popular Damascus sgian dubh as well as one with a real bog oak handle!
Our formal sgian dubhs for sale include the traditional clan crest sgian dubh and the Masonic sgian dubh -- each comes with a customizable jewel pommel so you can pick a jewel to match your tartan colors.
