Get your Sgian Dubh (the kilt knife you wear in your sock) at USA Kilts
Highlanders typically carried full sets of various weapons. Sgian / Skean Dubh, pronounced "Skeen Doo" means "black knife" in Gaelic. It was a small knife -- a back-up weapon and utility blade usually concealed in the folds of the Great Kilt. Over the years, it became customary to take out your sgian dubh and tuck it in the top of your kilt hose when you were among friends. “Black knife” may refer to the dark colored wood used for the handles, or to the idea that it was a weapon used in dark places for dark intent.
Now in more peaceful times, the tradition of wearing your sgian dubh in the top of your hose (on your dominant hand side) has continued. Why not? After all, every Scotsman is a warrior at heart. Every sgian dubh sold by USA Kilts is made in the UK. Our line includes rustic knives with genuine Scottish Red Deer (stag) antler and bog oak handles as well as formal jewel pommel designs. You can pick a jewel to match your tartan colors, or show off your Clan Crest. Cut open a haggis, or pop open a beer with our sgian dubhs. Unless otherwise noted, the sgian dubh blade is not very sharp when you receive it.
