Middleton is essentially the same tartan as MacDonald of Sleat/Applecross. It first appeared in Smith's 1850 work and seems to originate with the MacDonald. As a district tartan, it represents a remote peninsula opposite the Island of Skye on Scotland's northwest coast. STA sample hand woven by Marcello Castro 1986. MacGregor Hastie (Sindex notes) stated that it acquired the name Applecross simply because it had been found in that area and is practically the same as the red Lord of the Isles & Sleat as given by Johnston.
