  • Notes:

A town as well as a county, Sligo lies in the North of Ireland facing the Atlantic Ocean. Once part of the historical Kingdom of Connaught, Sligo is famous as the burial place of the legendary Queen Mab. The port & Bay of Sligo have been in use for at least fifteen hundred years --Molaise and the other early saints of Sligo founded several religious communities on the islands. (Well over a thousand years later, in the late 19th c., the monk Brother Walfrid, a Sligo native, helped found the Celtic Football Club in Glasgow.) Today the port of Sligo is still considered one of the three greatest ports on the West Coast of Ireland. Today Sligo is famous both for its port & for its rich tradition of folk music. - notes by Sarah Nagle
