Product Description
This tie is made in Scotland from the same material used to make our wool Firefighters Memorial Tartan Kilts.
This tartan was designed as a salute to firefighters, everywhere in the world, who are ready to sacrifice their lives everyday for the protection of others. It was also designed to memorialize those firefighters who have already made the ultimate sacrifice.
- The red background of the tartan represents fire and the fire trucks;
- The black is in remembrance of those who have already made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
- The green and gold represent the Irish community which has such strong ties with the organization and occupation of fire fighting;
- And lastly, the three red lines in the middle of each square are: 3 red threads, 4 red threads, and 3 red threads – representing the 343 FDNY firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11/2001 – the largest amount of fire fighters who ever perished in a single day in the history of the United States.
A portion of all sales of these kilts will be donated to the Leary Firefighters Foundation and therefore this tartan is ONLY available through USA Kilts and may not be reproduced anywhere without the expressed written consent of USA Kilts.
This tartan was designed by: Kelly Stewart, USA Kilts, 2007. Buyers Guide
Kelly's Motivation for creating the Firefighters Memorial Tartan:
Kelly has admired the profession of Firefighting for a long time. It is to her, the noblest of professions. Firefighters run into burning buildings when others are running out. They risk their lives to save others who they know nothing about. No matter what your job, gender or social status, they’re here to risk their lives to save yours.
Less than 2 weeks after the 9/11 attacks, Kelly visited ground zero in New York and was forever changed. There were piles of rubble and crumbled buildings all around and the white dust covered everything. The smell of drywall and death hung heavy in the air. In that moment, she reflected on the men and women who rushed into the towering infernos to save others. They rushed up the crowded stairwells, pushing through people coming down to find those trapped by rubble or hiding under desks. Many of those heroic men and women did not make it home to see their families that day.
She wanted to do something to show those individuals and ALL firefighters that what they do is important... more than any celebrity or sports figure celebrated in pop culture. She wanted to give back in a meaningful way, but didn’t know how. Then, one day in 2007, it came to her. She decided to create a tartan honoring ALL firefighters for what they do every day. The modest firefighters Kelly has spoken with tell her, they’re “just doing their job”. To her, they’re doing the most IMPORTANT job and deserve every ounce of credit and help that we can give back to them.
Kelly created the Firefighter’s Memorial Tartan as a way to raise money for firefighter’s charities. USA Kilts is donating 15% of every kilt made (that’s a majority of our labor costs per kilt) to the Leary Firefighters Foundation. Please note that we’re not “inflating the price” of these kilts... we are charging the standard price for our 5 Yard Wool kilts and Premier kilts and donating the money out of our own pockets.
To every firefighter (or family member of one) who reads this message, thank you. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We hope the money we donate helps to train and save the lives of those who are here to save ours.
