Already a popular style by the mid 18th century, the crowned heart pins now known as luckenbooths took their name from the locked booths ("Luckenbooths" in Scots dialect) of Edinburgh. Young men would often present the women they were courting with a luckenbooth brooch as a symbol of their affection. They were also a popular gift for brides and new mothers.By the early 1800's, it was acknowledged as a country tradition to pin a luckenbooth to a baby's blanket as a good luck charm for both the mother and the baby.
