    From W & A K Johnston's 1906 publication which states that it was taken from a piece of tartan dyed and woven by the wife of Alexander XVI of Keppoch who was killed at Culloden. Prince Charles was said to have been given a plaid in this tartan which he left at Moy Hall in his rushed escape from there. It was kept by the MacKintosh's. It is suspected that the original might be a Wilsons' sample. If so, it dates to no later than about 1800, but the original story is more romantic.
