The earliest reference to a MacQuarrie tartan appears in the collection of General Sir William Cockburn, compiled around 1810-1820. This tartan is a recreation of the Cockburn MacQuarrie sett.

MacQuarrie's were followers of the Lords of the Isles and held lands on the Isle of Mull. The chiefship today is vacant.
