The Stuarts of Bute are descended from the natural son of King Robert II. Though once used solely by the family from whom it derives its title, this tartan is now enjoyed by many other Stuarts as well. Whether or not the pattern was in use before the publication of the 'Vestiarium Scoticum' in 1842, has not been confirmed.
