This universal Irish tartan is a color modification of MacLean of Duart. It was claimed that it was first recorded in "Clans Originaux" as Murphy, but was so popular it was later renamed "Tara" ...the first reference to that name was in 1967.

The Hill of Tara, know as Temair in Gaelic, is located in Co. Meath, Ireland. It was once the ancient seat of power in Ireland - 142 kings are said to have reigned there in prehistoric and historic times. In ancient Irish religion and in mythology, Tara was the sacred place of dwelling for the gods, and was the entrance to the otherworld. Saint Patrick is said to have come to Tara to confront the ancient religion of the pagans at its most powerful site.

The standing stones of Tara also recall the legend that candidates for the High Kingship of Tara had to drive their chariots toward two sacred stones standing closely together. They remained closed for the non-accepted candidate and opened a path only for the rightful king.
