This pewter Kilt Belt Buckle showcases the great swords of ancient Scotland - the Claymore - crossed behind a richly detailed targe shield. Celtic knotwork borders and Greek Key patterns add extra depth to a handsome design. Measures just under 4" long by 2.75" wide.
The two-handed Claymore was a large sword used at least from the 15th up to the 17th century. It’s basic design may date back as far as the Scottish Wars of Independence (Robert the Bruce and William Wallace’s days), but the sword evolved into the form we are familiar with in the 16th century. The last battle in which it is considered to have been used in any significant numbers was Killiecrankie in 1689. You can read more HERE.
