Measuring Instructions
Waist
A Traditional kilt is worn higher than your pants, just above the belly button (for larger customers, just above the WIDEST part of your belly). This is where the top of the kilt will sit.
DO NOT HOLD YOUR STOMACH IN. You’ll only going to get a kilt that's too small. Just relax and stand "at ease".
Make sure to use a good sewing tape measure. If you don't have a sewing tape measure, you can use a leather belt to measure. Wrap it around you, mark it and then lay it flat on a metal tape measure to get the measurement. The tape measure should be snug – as snug as you will be wearing the kilt.
*Note: It will probably be 2 to 4 inches more than your pants size. This is common.
*TIP: BIG guys with large bellies may want to wear the kilt around the naval, as it gives a more flattering appearance.
Hip
With the same tape measure, measure around the absolute largest part of your rear.
Take this measurement a little LOOSELY. You should be able to slide a finger between the tape measure and your body when you measure.
This is your HIP measurement. In most cases, it's about 4-6 inches larger than the waist measurement.
Length
If possible, it’s best to take this measurement wearing shorts and a form fitting shirt. There are 3 different ways to measure length:
1) With assistance
2) With bath towel assistance
3) Without assistance
1) Length Measurement with assistance
Stand tall with your back straight. Do NOT look down or bend over as this will change the length measurement. Just stand tall and face forward.
Have the other person measure down the SIDE of your leg. On your side, put the "0" end of the tape measure at the top of where your kilt will be (the same height you took your waist measurement from). Measure from that point down the side of your body to the middle of your knee.
The number on the tape that is right where the bottom edge of the kilt will be is the length.
2) Length Measurement with bath towel assistance
Take a bath towel and FOLD IT so that it is 24" long.
Wear a pair of shorts, so you can see your knees and stand roughly 10 feet back from a full length mirror. Hold the towel up to your waist, putting the top of the towel at the spot you took the waist measurement… just above the belly button.
If the 24" length hits below your knee, shorten the towel by folding another inch or two, so that the bottom edge hits you square in the middle of the kneecap.
If the 24" length hits above your knee, lengthen the towel by unfolding an inch or two, so that the bottom edge hits you square in the middle of the kneecap.
3) Length measurement without assistance
Kneel on the floor with your back straight. You're going to measure down the SIDE of your leg to the floor.
From the top of where your kilt will be (the same height you took your waist measurement from), measure down the side of your body to the floor down the side of your leg. It's easier to put the "0" end of the tape measure barely touching the floor and the numbered end at the top.
SUBTRACT 1" FROM THIS MEASUREMENT to have the kilt sit at the middle of the knee.
Use the following chart for reference. These are typical height / length measurements.

Quality Price Value I've wanted a kilt for several decades and my wife finally said get one. I shopped around online (US & Scotland) and felt that USA Kilts was my best option. My 8yd Premier in Hamilton Red Modern pleated to the stripe (regimental) is beautiful. Mac did a perfect job of aligning the stripes. I've worn it a couple of times with the Grey Braemar Jacket & Vest and received many complements. Everybody thought the kilt was made in Scotland. I explained that USA Kilts in the Philadelphia area is as good or better. The service was great & received the kilt several weeks earlier than I expected. Price Value Quality I am very pleased with all aspects of my new kilt. The workmanship and attention to detail are outstanding. Although the website stated that it take 8-10 weeks for my kilt arrive, it actually only took 3 week. A very pleasant surprise! (Posted on 2/15/2019) - A work of art Aodhà n Crawford

Price Value Quality Finally decided it was time to order a new kilt, my old kilt had served me for almost 15 years and was just not cutting it anymore. I can only say that I wish I had ordered this kilt years ago it has exceeded my expectations in every way. Truth be told I was in a debate between the 5 yard and the 8 and i ordered it pleated to the stripe i am beyond impressed and overjoyed at the quality of the piece. It arrived well packaged, with a storage breathable fabric bag as well as excess tartan left over that I can use to send in for new custom hose as well as various other projects. This kilt is a higher quality than my older one, that I paid quite a bit more for.... As far as price... They're not charging enough for the work that went into making this, value.... This will last me at least 15 years so long as i take care of myself, quality on a scale of 1-10 it deserves an 11.
Unsure about this purchase? Don't be! This is the smartest investment you will make when it comes to a family tartan.
USA kilts has done it again, thank you is not enough for this brilliant piece of wearable art. (Posted on 2/5/2019) - OUtstanding Bob Zamora

I'm very pleased. (Posted on 11/2/2018) - Excellent construction Ed S.

Value Quality Price I just received my Premier 8-yard kilt, my second kilt from Rocky (that should be an indication). I chose the stripe or regimental pleat and the care taken to match the pattern is outstanding. I will wear it proudly. (Posted on 9/15/2018) - Never disappoints! Manuel

Value Quality Price Just received my County Cavan Premier kilt, my first 8 yard kilt, and I totally understand why it is called Premier. Beautiful product, well tailored, and as always great and fast customer service. Everyone should have at least one Premier kilt in their closet! (Posted on 9/15/2018) - Excellent kilt Bob Bean

Price Value Quality I purchased the premiere 8 yard kilt to wear to an event in Inverness, Scotland. Since I come from a small clan, I knew that everyone there would pay careful attention to the tartan and that would put the craftsmanship of the product on display. I was proud of the wonderful comments that I received on my kilt from those who truly know how to judge craftsmanship. Thank you! I highly recommend these kilts for any formal occasion anywhere in the world. By the way, the kilts also traveled very well, I was able to pack them from Washington DC and travel 2 weeks in Scotland with very little in the way of wrinkles.
Thank you, USA Kilts (Posted on 8/18/2018) - Impressive Craftsmanship Alex R.

Price Value Quality I purchased this kilt a few years ago and have worn it to many events since. I consistently receive compliments on its beauty and quality. It is as good or better than kilts I have seen from reputable Scottish tailors and is a steal at this price. Customer service was excellent. I tell everyone who will listen to buy from USA Kilts! Buyers Guide
Question: My tartan is available in 13 AND 16 oz cloth... which should I get?
The weight of the cloth is a personal preference. 13 oz cloth is considered "Medium Weight" while 16 oz is considered "Heavy Weight". While they will both make a very nice kilt, which weight you want is a matter of taste. We would ask you to consider your environment... If you're the type of person who is always 'warm', live in a hot / humid climate or will be wearing your kilt most often outdoors during the summer, then we'd suggest the 13 oz cloth. If you are always cool, live in a cool climate (Canada or northern USA), or will be wearing the kilt indoors most of the time, a 16 oz kilt may be right for you.
Question: Why are there so many / so few choices for my name?
Our wool tartan gallery shows you every stock tartan from every mill in the UK. We want to make sure our customers can weigh all of their options before making a decision. We don't just use 1 mill or 2 mills for our cloth... we use the top 7 tartan mills in the UK (plus some smaller ones for custom weaves). This gives our customers the maximum number of tartan options we can provide.
Some clans have only 1 tartan or there may only be 1 mill that weaves a specific tartan. Larger clans may have DOZENS of tartan designs woven by multiple mills. All the options are shown in the "Tartans" gallery. -
