Celtic Artisan Guarantee

We guarantee that every highland wear product USA Kilts sells is proudly made in America, Scotland, England, Ireland or Wales. By purchasing this product, you are supporting skilled Celtic artisans. Your choice honors the heritage you embrace and preserves it for future generations.

When taking measurements for your kilt, make sure to use a good sewing tape measure.  Wrap it around yourself at the widest part of your waist (typically just above the belly button) as this is where the top of the kilt will sit. The tape measure should be pulled as snug as you want your finished kilt to be.

Do NOT hold your stomach in. You’ll only get a kilt that's too small. Just relax and stand "at ease".

For more detailed instructions, open the "Measuring Instructions" tab under the product description or watch our video on how to measure by the main product image.

With the same tape measure, measure around the absolute largest part of your rear.

Take this measurement a little LOOSELY. You should be able to slide a finger between the tape measure and your body when you measure. This is your HIP measurement.

In most cases, it's about 4-6 inches larger than the waist measurement.

Stand tall with your back straight. Do NOT look down or bend over as this will change the length measurement. Just stand tall and face forward.

Have another person kneel at your side with the tape measure. They will put the "0" end of the tape measure on the SIDE of your body at the top of where you took your waist measurement (likely just above your "love handles").  Measure from that point down the side of your body to the middle of your knee, which is where the bottom of the kilt will be. That distance will be your kilt's length.

For more detailed instructions & alternative ways to measure length, open the "Measuring Instructions" tab under the product description or watch our video on how to measure by the main product image.

This is used to double check your length measurement. Please be accurate with your height.

Flashes are the elastic garters worn to hold up your kilt hose. We give you the option to purchase them in the same tartan material as your kilt.

The Fly Plaid is the piece of cloth worn over the left shoulder that resembles a cape.  If you are considering a fly plaid, it is BEST purchased at the same time as your kilt, so it can be cut from the same bolt of cloth.  This way, there will be no issues with dye lots or different colors used in the fly plaid and the kilt.

4 clip Kilt Hanger

If you've ever tried to hang a heavy kilt on a 2 clip plastic hanger, you know they can slip off.  Solve that problem by using the same professional grade hanger we use in our store.

    Waist

A Traditional kilt is worn higher than your pants, just above the belly button (for larger customers, just above the WIDEST part of your belly).  This is where the top of the kilt will sit.

DO NOT HOLD YOUR STOMACH IN. You’ll only going to get a kilt that's too small.  Just relax and stand "at ease".

Make sure to use a good sewing tape measure. If you don't have a sewing tape measure, you can use a leather belt to measure. Wrap it around you, mark it and then lay it flat on a metal tape measure to get the measurement.

The tape measure should be snug – as snug as you will be wearing the kilt.

*Note: It will probably be 2 to 4 inches more than your pants size. This is common.

*TIP: BIG guys with large bellies may want to wear the kilt around the naval, as it gives a more flattering appearance.

    Hip

With the same tape measure, measure around the absolute largest part of your rear.

Take this measurement a little LOOSELY. You should be able to slide a finger between the tape measure and your body when you measure.

This is your HIP measurement. In most cases, it's about 4-6 inches larger than the waist measurement.

    Length

If possible, it’s best to take this measurement wearing shorts and a form fitting shirt.  There are 3 different ways to measure length:

    1) With assistance

    2) With bath towel assistance

    3) Without assistance

    1) Length Measurement with assistance

Stand tall with your back straight. Do NOT look down or bend over as this will change the length measurement. Just stand tall and face forward.

Have the other person measure down the SIDE of your leg. On your side, put the "0" end of the tape measure at the top of where your kilt will be (the same height you took your waist measurement from). Measure from that point down the side of your body to the middle of your knee.

The number on the tape that is right where the bottom edge of the kilt will be is the length.

    2) Length Measurement with bath towel assistance

Take a bath towel and FOLD IT so that it is 24" long.

Wear a pair of shorts, so you can see your knees and stand roughly 10 feet back from a full length mirror. Hold the towel up to your waist, putting the top of the towel at the spot you took the waist measurement… just above the belly button.

If the 24" length hits below your knee, shorten the towel by folding another inch or two, so that the bottom edge hits you square in the middle of the kneecap.

If the 24" length hits above your knee, lengthen the towel by unfolding an inch or two, so that the bottom edge hits you square in the middle of the kneecap.

Once you have the top of the towel sitting at the top of where you want to wear the kilt and the bottom edge hitting the middle of your knee, measure the length of the folded towel from the top to the bottom. That will be your kilt length measurement

    3) Length measurement without assistance

Kneel on the floor with your back straight. You're going to measure down the SIDE of your leg to the floor.

From the top of where your kilt will be (the same height you took your waist measurement from), measure down the side of your body to the floor down the side of your leg. It's easier to put the "0" end of the tape measure barely touching the floor and the numbered end at the top.

SUBTRACT 1" FROM THIS MEASUREMENT to have the kilt sit at the middle of the knee.

Use the following chart for reference. These are typical height / length measurements.

After starting with the casual kilt, I decided to step up to the Premier 8-yard, and I really couldn't be more pleased! It is a finely crafted and exceptionally beautiful garment. I will be proud to hand this down to the next generation, but not before I've worn it well! Rocky and his crew are top notch, and the craftsmanship and customer service at USAKilts CAN NOT be beat! Thanks USAKilts! (Posted on 5/19/2015)

The quality was excellent. The addition of the garment bag was an extra bonus. I look forward to wearing my new kilt during the 2015 Sherwood Forest Faire, 2015 Sherwood Music Festival, and the 2015 Texas Renaissance Festival.

My new USA Kilt compares in every way with the kilt I had made in Edinburgh (Geoffrey the Kiltmaker) 36 years ago. I have to admit that I was a little concerned about not having the kiltmaker take the measurements and trusting this to my daughter. Rocky's measuring instructions were easily followed, and as a result, the fit is PERFECT!!!! I COULD NOT BE MORE PLEASED!! Equally impressive was the customer service and personal attention. There was a delay in production from the mill in Scotland, but I was advised of it's progress and kept informed. When the tartan did arrive from the mill the kilt was fabricated expeditiously. Rocky and his staff are great people to work with and are very personable. It is WITHOUT ANY RESERVATIION THAT I RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT AND ENDORSE THIS BUSINESS.

I own not one, but two of USA Kilts' 8 yard Premier Kilts in two variations of my family tartan and quite simply, they are the finest and most versatile garments in my wardrobe. Over the years I have worn them to weddings, holiday dinners, church services, highland games, funerals, anniversary celebrations, the theatre, my children's school events, and a wide variety of casual, semi-formal and formal dinners and events.

Contrary to any popular misconception, these wool kilts are cool in the summer, warm in the winter and have an amazingly wide application to my existing wardrobe; I've worn them with t-shirts or ties, dress shoes or boots or even the full highland attire.

Everything about these kilts says "quality" and I will be just as proud to hand them down to my children as I am each and every time I strap them on myself and go out into the world dressed in the style these Premier kilts afford me. (Posted on 10/14/2014)

This is my first kilt, and I am overwhelmed by the quality. My dearest friends purchased it as an anniversary gift, and I am blown away with the fit, comfort and attention to every detail. I'm wearing it almost every day, and couldn't be happier. My kilt had a letter from Rocky which assured me that all I had to do was contact him if I had any concerns. Rocky, it is absolutely perfect! Thank you for doing such impeccable work. (Posted on 10/14/2014)

This is my first Kilt purchase from USA Kilts. My regret is that I did not know about them before I met them at a festival several years ago. I could not be more pleased with the kilt I picked up last Saturday. The quality of material, the manufacture and overall service has been fantastic. Want a great KILT? Get it from Rocky and Kelly and crew. They are the best!!! (Posted on 10/14/2014)

I have the Premier 8-yard kilt. I wear it with a formal jacket or a casual shirt and it looks great. It is a solid, well-built product well worth the wait to acquire. This is not my first purchase from USAKilts and I've had the chance to talk to the staff several times about my orders and/or custom requests--always helpful, always friendly.

I also have a Custom PV kilt for more knock-around activities--again, USA kilts was great at helping me get it "just right".

Great company, great product, great people! (Posted on 10/14/2014)

I recently received my custom woven tartan in a very difficult pattern. I was blown away by the quality of the weave and the fantastic craftsmanship in this premium kilt.

If you want an outstanding kilt in a hard to find tartan pattern, USA Kilts is the place to go. Their attitude is "can do" and I can't is not a word they know.

I'm constantly asked about my custom kilts and where can I get one. There is only one response to that and simply it is call or email USA Kilts for first rate service quality merchandise and products that you can be proud of.

Thank you Rocky and Kelly for all that you do for us Highlanders (Posted on 10/14/2014)

Question: My tartan is available in 13 AND 16 oz cloth... which should I get?

The weight of the cloth is a personal preference.  13 oz cloth is considered "Medium Weight" while 16 oz is considered "Heavy Weight".  While they will both make a very nice kilt, which weight you want is a matter of taste.  We would ask you to consider your environment... If you're the type of person who is always 'warm', live in a hot / humid climate or will be wearing your kilt most often outdoors during the summer, then we'd suggest the 13 oz cloth.  If you are always cool, live in a cool climate (Canada or northern USA), or will be wearing the kilt indoors most of the time, a 16 oz kilt may be right for you.

Question:  Why are there so many / so few choices for my name?

Our wool tartan gallery shows you every stock tartan from every mill in the UK.  We want to make sure our customers can weigh all of their options before making a decision.  We don't just use 1 mill or 2 mills for our cloth... we use the top 7 tartan mills in the UK (plus some smaller ones for custom weaves).  This gives our customers the maximum number of tartan options we can provide.

Some clans have only 1 tartan or there may only be 1 mill that weaves a specific tartan.  Larger clans may have DOZENS of tartan designs woven by multiple mills.  All the options are shown in the "Tartans" gallery.
