The Sgian Dubh (pronounced "Skee'an Du" or "Skin' Du") is the little knife that is tucked in the kilt wearer's sock. Literally translated, it means "Black Knife". Since the Sgian Dubh has become a more ornamental part of the outfit, the blade of this knife is not sharpened. Dozens of Scottish names are available and it comes with your choice of jewel color.
Please note the following for all Clan Crest items:
1. If the clan name you want is NOT listed on a particular product (try looking for alternate spellings), we do not offer it for that particular item.
2. Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for delivery of Clan Crest items.
3. All Irish name items will come in the GAELIC spelling (what's in parentheses), NOT the ENGLISH spelling.

- Nice piece but thin blade. Buck
Quality Price ValueThe Sgian Dubh is a very nice piece with the clan crest but the blade is a bit thin. The overall quality is very good and should give many years of pleasure. This can and will be handed down for generations to come. But I would not want it in a real fight due to the thin blade which may snap off. Or maybe it will just spring back into shape. Quality Price ValueI've been meaning to get my boyfriend a new knife, but one with his family crest on it and this is perfect. He loves it! The gift box it comes in is gorgeous too! (Posted on 11/28/2016)
- Sgian Dubh Doug
Quality Price ValueNice detail over all, the case and crest are very nice what brings the rating down for me is I feel the quality of the blade it's self could be much nicer for the price. I have a $20 knife with about the same quality blade (Posted on 11/12/2016)

- VERY NICE DadofKilter
Price Value QualityPurchased as holiday gift for Son (although he did not give us "wish list" until 1 week prior). Website ordering process worked very well. Found out USA Kilts has to get Clan specific items from Scotland...which of course delays delivery. Received this item the day after Christmas...oh well...it was really our Son's fault for not telling us what he wanted in timely manner. USA Kilts kept me well informed of status of order. Sent other items we ordered before this arrived so we'd have them for the holiday. Very nice Sgian Dubh with the Buchannan Crest. (Posted on 10/14/2014)

Wooden and Stag Horn sgian dubhs are used more for casual and ‘day wear’ type outfits. Dress sgian dubhs (usually black in color with or without a stone on the top) are typically reserved for formal functions.
If you choose to wear a sgian dubh, we highly recommend wearing flashes… The elastic band on the flashes helps to keep the sgain dubh “secure” in your hose top. Without the flashes, the sgain dubh may easily fall out (and get lost).
Also, think about where you're going before tucking your sgian dubh into your hose... Many buildings have security screenings and a Sgian Dubh may be confiscated as a weapon. When in doubt, leave it at home or check it in your luggage.
Sgian Dubh, literally translated, means “Black Knife”. It was originally concealed in a small pocket, usually sewn into the armpit area. When in the company of friends, it would be taken out and tucked into the top of the kilt hose as a sign of respect (i.e. not hiding a weapon).
Today, sgian dubhs are usually more decorative than utilitarian. They are worn by tucking about 2/3 of the (sheathed) knife into the top of the kilt hose. Which leg it is worn on is determined by the dominant hand of the wearer (right handed guys put it in their right leg’s hose).
AvailabilityThe Clan Crest sgian dubh is a 'custom' item. Generally, this product ships within 4 to 6 weeks of the order date.
