Celtic Artisan Guarantee

We guarantee that every highland wear product USA Kilts sells is proudly made in America, Scotland, England, Ireland or Wales. By purchasing this product, you are supporting skilled Celtic artisans. Your choice honors the heritage you embrace and preserves it for future generations.

Select your style of kilt from our 3 wool models. Think of this as "Good, Better, Best".  Our 5 Yard Kilt is "Good" for casual and some dress functions.  Our Top Stitched 8 Yard kilt is "Better" for dress situations as well as any casual events.  Our Premier 8 Yard Kilt is "Best" and will fit in perfectly from a white tie affair to a pub crawl.

When taking measurements for your kilt, make sure to use a good sewing tape measure.  Wrap it around yourself at the widest part of your waist (typically just above the belly button) as this is where the top of the kilt will sit. The tape measure should be pulled as snug as you want your finished kilt to be.

Do NOT hold your stomach in. You’ll only get a kilt that's too small. Just relax and stand "at ease".

For more detailed instructions, open the "Measuring Instructions" tab under the product description or watch our video on how to measure by the main product image.

With the same tape measure, measure around the absolute largest part of your rear.

Take this measurement a little LOOSELY. You should be able to slide a finger between the tape measure and your body when you measure. This is your HIP measurement.

In most cases, it's about 4-6 inches larger than the waist measurement.

Stand tall with your back straight. Do NOT look down or bend over as this will change the length measurement. Just stand tall and face forward.

Have another person kneel at your side with the tape measure. They will put the "0" end of the tape measure on the SIDE of your body at the top of where you took your waist measurement (likely just above your "love handles").  Measure from that point down the side of your body to the middle of your knee, which is where the bottom of the kilt will be. That distance will be your kilt's length.

For more detailed instructions & alternative ways to measure length, open the "Measuring Instructions" tab under the product description or watch our video on how to measure by the main product image.

This is used to double check your length measurement. Please be accurate with your height.

If you selected the Top Stiched 8 Yard Kilt or the Premier 8 Yard Kilt, you have a choice how you'd like your kilt pleated. If you selected the 5 yard wool kilt, the kilt will be pleated the way we feel it looks best, based on the sett size, the length of cloth, and your waist measurement.

Sett vs Stripe

Flashes are the elastic garters worn to hold up your kilt hose. We give you the option to purchase them in the same tartan material as your kilt.

The Fly Plaid is the piece of cloth worn over the left shoulder that resembles a cape.  If you are considering a fly plaid, it is BEST purchased at the same time as your kilt, so it can be cut from the same bolt of cloth.  This way, there will be no issues with dye lots or different colors used in the fly plaid and the kilt.

4 clip Kilt Hanger

If you've ever tried to hang a heavy kilt on a 2 clip plastic hanger, you know they can slip off.  Solve that problem by using the same professional grade hanger we use in our store.

    Waist

A Traditional kilt is worn higher than your pants, just above the belly button (for larger customers, just above the WIDEST part of your belly).  This is where the top of the kilt will sit.

DO NOT HOLD YOUR STOMACH IN. You’ll only going to get a kilt that's too small.  Just relax and stand "at ease".

Make sure to use a good sewing tape measure. If you don't have a sewing tape measure, you can use a leather belt to measure. Wrap it around you, mark it and then lay it flat on a metal tape measure to get the measurement.

The tape measure should be snug – as snug as you will be wearing the kilt.

*Note: It will probably be 2 to 4 inches more than your pants size. This is common.

*TIP: BIG guys with large bellies may want to wear the kilt around the naval, as it gives a more flattering appearance.

    Hip

With the same tape measure, measure around the absolute largest part of your rear.

Take this measurement a little LOOSELY. You should be able to slide a finger between the tape measure and your body when you measure.

This is your HIP measurement. In most cases, it's about 4-6 inches larger than the waist measurement.

    Length

If possible, it’s best to take this measurement wearing shorts and a form fitting shirt.  There are 3 different ways to measure length:

    1) With assistance

    2) With bath towel assistance

    3) Without assistance

    1) Length Measurement with assistance

Stand tall with your back straight. Do NOT look down or bend over as this will change the length measurement. Just stand tall and face forward.

Have the other person measure down the SIDE of your leg. On your side, put the "0" end of the tape measure at the top of where your kilt will be (the same height you took your waist measurement from). Measure from that point down the side of your body to the middle of your knee.

The number on the tape that is right where the bottom edge of the kilt will be is the length.

    2) Length Measurement with bath towel assistance

Take a bath towel and FOLD IT so that it is 24" long.

Wear a pair of shorts, so you can see your knees and stand roughly 10 feet back from a full length mirror. Hold the towel up to your waist, putting the top of the towel at the spot you took the waist measurement… just above the belly button.

If the 24" length hits below your knee, shorten the towel by folding another inch or two, so that the bottom edge hits you square in the middle of the kneecap.

If the 24" length hits above your knee, lengthen the towel by unfolding an inch or two, so that the bottom edge hits you square in the middle of the kneecap.

Once you have the top of the towel sitting at the top of where you want to wear the kilt and the bottom edge hitting the middle of your knee, measure the length of the folded towel from the top to the bottom. That will be your kilt length measurement

    3) Length measurement without assistance

Kneel on the floor with your back straight. You're going to measure down the SIDE of your leg to the floor.

From the top of where your kilt will be (the same height you took your waist measurement from), measure down the side of your body to the floor down the side of your leg. It's easier to put the "0" end of the tape measure barely touching the floor and the numbered end at the top.

SUBTRACT 1" FROM THIS MEASUREMENT to have the kilt sit at the middle of the knee.

Use the following chart for reference. These are typical height / length measurements.

For a fantastic kilt at a very reasonable price, look no further. The colors are rich and the kilt is very well made. Enough black to make sure you don't look like you're wrapped in a flag. As others have said, measure honest and true, and you will not be disappointed. (Posted on 1/31/2016)

This is third kilt I have purchased from USA Kilts and it is as good as the first two, and better than the kilts given to me by my pipe band. This one is particularly great as a warm weather kilt with feel of wool kilt without the bulk of a 16 oz 8 yd kilt and well constructed. You cannot go wrong with this American Heritage tartan kilt from USA Kilts! (Posted on 8/16/2015)

This is still my favorite kilt and I wear it any time I can find a reason. I love the design of this tartan and my first purchase from USA Kilts. They did an excellent job on the Kilts and it looks great, I have worn it dressed more formal, with sweaters and with a T-shirts and it always looks great. I also love explaining the significance of the tartan. Great Kilt, Great Shop! (Posted on 7/19/2015)

We ordered this kilt right before Christmas without expecting it to come in time. It arrived in plenty of time as did the other items we ordered just a week before Christmas. The kilt is beautiful, well crafted and made of high quality wool. Excellent value. (Posted on 12/29/2014)
Gadzo! A Splendid Kilt  Kilted Tailor

Readers: Since you have wandered down here, let a Professional Historical Tailor, give an Intelligent Review. The writers good wife, insisted, measured(1st time kilt buyers, beware, Measure it Right, before you order, then it fits like a custom Saxon suit; a well made and well fitted kilt is a Thing of Joy and Beauty) ordered and bought this Kilt. It is my 2nd from this Company and the 4th in my 'kilt stable'. This kilt is 13oz, new wool, with a very good hand; three embossed straps, and good quality buckles. In this price range, it lacks the horse hair interfacing that it should have, (and could have, if you spent more $) But, it is an easy set of work for any Knight of the Shears, with even little experience, to alter it. If you do not wear The Kilt more than a few times in a year, it will likely not make much of a difference to you. The kilt is Very Well Made, the workmanship is well above the Imports from S.Asia, the fabric is worth every penny. So, if this reader would like a sturdy, good quality, Universal Tartan kilt, from a dealer who is beyond the Din of Reproach, you can do no better than buying this kilt(and perhaps have it retrofitted later on). For any Yank, this American Heritage Tartan Kilt is an execellent way to express your American/& or Scots connections. This writer has, by bloodlines, more of 'every other European ' DNA than Scots, so this was a perfect choice.
Thus Buy One and be happy in the wearing of The Kilt.
