Part of the Clan fled from the Outer Hebrides to the mainland and settled in MacKay country which explains the similarity between the two tartans. D.C.Stewart's own Sindex card says "Designed by J G MacKay for the M.Soc. 1909." but this is included in the 1880 Clans Originaux as 'Morrisson' (sic) so there's been a misunderstanding of some sort here. After the red tartan was adopted in the 1960s, this green and blue became known as the Society Morrison but is also called Green or Hunting.
The Morrison website adds to the story: "The green sett was developed by the Clan Society in 1909. Due to the loss of the Morrison original tartan around the 1700's , the Society selected a MacKay sett and added a red stripe. The reasoning behind this was undoubtedly centred around the Morrison settlement in MacKay territory by Ay Mac Hormaid (Morrison). He fell in love with the daughter of the Bishop of Caithness and subsequently married her. Her dowry was the whole of Durness on the mainland, and he relocated 60 Morrison families there in the 1600's."
