Product Description
Our Irish-made Grandfather shirt (aka Grandad Shirt, Graddad shirt, Irish Laborer Shirt, Banded collar shirt, Stand Up Collar Shirt, etc.) is inspired by the shirts of Irish working men of the 19th and early 20th century. However it is cut a little nicer and has cooler buttons than the old gents would have worn. Nevertheless, this is a cotton-linen shirt that can take abuse and still look dashing. Pairs perfectly with a kilt when you want something nicer than a t-shirt, but not as dressy as a dress shirt. Looks great with jeans too!

Quality Price Value I was expecting it to be hot in the summer but it breathes well and is the most comfortable shirt I own. Just dressy enough to wear to work just casual enough to wear every where else. I love it. I'm buying several more right now (Posted on 7/29/2020) - Good quality product Tom Fang

Price Value Quality Got this for looks with my grey tartan utility kilt. Did not realize how comfy it would be, as well. Washed before wearing, and the fit is good. (Posted on 3/25/2020) - Really loved this shirt until... ccamp5ster

Price Value Quality Got this as a Christmas present, tried it on and it fit great. Then I washed it. I washed this shirt before I wore it the first time. I washed it in cold water ( as I do all my laundry). I put it in the dryer briefly (on low). it was still damp when I pulled it out. Went to put it on and the sleeves had shrunk at least three inches. It seems that if you are going to have to pay this much for a shirt; the fabfic would be pre shrunk. If there are any special laundering instructions it should be stated very clearly! I was planning on ordering another but i'm so disappointed in this shirt. (Posted on 12/30/2019) - Very Pleased Aaron

A Brief History of the Grandfather Shirt
The banded collar shirt first appeared in the Victorian age with the invention of detachable collars. It was practical and saved on washing. Naturally, many men simply left off the collar if they didn't need it. And this was especially true of working men such as the Highland ghillie or the Irish navvy. It was comfortable for long days in the fields or on the docks.
Though they were standard work-a-day shirts for many classes in many different countries, it was in Ireland that these shirts became a form of traditional dress, like the aran sweater (the “jumper”) or the flat cap. It was in Ireland that the name “Grandfather’s shirt” was coined and quickly shortened to granddad shirt or graddad shirt.
Our Grandad Shirt is Timeless Fashion
Traditional Irish grandfather shirts were, and still remain, practical yet sleek and dignified menswear. You can find old photos of everyone from Welsh coal miners to American cowboys wearing them (not to mention the occasional businessman relaxing after hours). And yet nothing about the Grandfather shirt feels out of place in the 21st century.
Irish Shirt Quality - Granddad Would Approve
A true Granddad shirt will be made of cotton or linen, or a blend of the two. Ours is made in Ireland of rich cotton with just a touch of linen. There’s just enough linen to add durability and that wonderful nubby texture, but not so much that the shirt will require ironing. It’s just about perfect and will only become more and more comfortable over the years. The front features the traditional placket with a dozen small decorative buttons. On the back you’ll find a reinforced yoke and gusset for ease of movement.
The Perfect Traditional Work Shirt for Your Kilt OR Jeans!
Cut long and roomy, this authentic Irish graddad shirt will easily fit in your kilt or even jeans without pulling out. We offer a variety of colors including a black, which tones perfectly with most any tartan as black is a neutral color! Pair this shirt with your favorite kilt, coton hose and flat cap.
